The Multicultural Education Conference in Anaheim (MECA) welcomes California State University San Marcos as an Academia Sponsor. Three faculty members from Cal State San Marcos will present at MECA: Science Education Associate Professor Dr. Ingrid Flores and Adjunct Professor/ Education & Sociology Librarian and Antonia P. Olivas will co-present on “Bringing Awareness of Cultural Competence to a University Campus” August 19th, 2017 at 3:00 pm and Dr. Carol Van Vooren will present on “Acquiring Additional Languages in Schools around the World” on August 20th, 2017 from 2:00 pm.
Ingrid M. Flores is an Associate Professor in Science Education at California State University San Marcos. She earned a bachelorʼs degree in biological sciences from St. Edwards University, a masterʼs degree in curriculum and instruction in science education from the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP), and a Doctorate of Education in Curriculum and Instruction in Higher Education from Argosy University. Her science education courses focus on developing pre-service teachersʼ content and pedagogical competence through exploratory and investigative science. She also teaches mathematics education courses that focus on constructivist teaching and learning approaches. Dr. Floresʼs previous teaching experience at UTEP included extensive work in developmental mathematics with underprepared and underrepresented/minority student populations to track them into science and mathematics majors.
Antonia P. Olivas is the Education & Sociology Librarian at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) where she is also an adjunct professor in the School of Education. She earned a bachelorʼs degree in Secondary Education from Arizona State University West, a masterʼs degree in Library & Information Science from the University of Arizona, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the joint doctoral program of CSUSM and University of California San Diego. Dr. Olivasʼ dissertation is on the motivation to lead of underrepresented minority academic librarians in higher education. Her current published research and conference presentations focus on the intersectionality of culture, identity, and agency in academic libraries, the motivations of underrepresented minority librarians, developing student scholar mind-sets in Latin@ undergraduate students, and cultural intelligence in the higher education classroom.
Carol Van Vooren, Ed.D. is currently an Assistant Professor at California State University San Marcos. She has served as a high school ESL teacher, Migrant Education resource teacher, Title VII special project coordinator, elementary principal, an educational foundation board member, and the co-president of the California Association of Professors of Educational Administration. Her primary focus is developing outstanding K-12 leaders. Dr. Van Vooren’s passion for all students motivates her to develop teachers with 21st century knowledge, skills, and dispositions to lead in a global society.
