Teaching second language vocabulary: The importance of focusing on formulaic sequences of words

Second language (L2) vocabulary teaching and learning are often focused on individual words. However, formulaic sequences of words (such as collocations and idioms) are just as important, as they have been shown to be strongly associated with native-like, fluent, communicative language use. In this session, the importance of attention to formulaic sequences in L2 vocabulary learning and teaching will be discussed and, based on findings from previous L2 research, a series of hands-on techniques for teaching formulaic sequences in the ESL classroom will be provided.
